Volunteer with one of New York City’s oldest community composting programs! The Lower East Side Ecology Center in partnership with the NYC Compost Project diverts over 400 tons of food scraps from landfills annually. Food scraps are collected locally and then processed into compost at the East River Park Compost Yard. The finished compost is then used for community greening projects to revitalize tree beds and soils across the city.

The Ecology Center and the NYC Compost Project currently seek volunteers to participate in their Compost Workday on Thursday, September 13, 2018 from 1PM to 3PM. Work gloves will be provided.

Mission Statement

The Lower East Side Ecology Center works toward a more sustainable New York City by providing community-based recycling and composting programs, developing local stewardship of green space, and increasing community awareness, involvement and youth development through environmental education programs.

Description

The Lower East Side Ecology Center, also known as Outstanding Renewal Enterprises, Inc., was founded in 1987. It was one of the first organizations to offer community-based recycling and composting programs in New York City, facilitated by providing innovative recycling drop-off centers. Today, the Ecology Center offers services and education for a range of environmental subjects: organics collection/composting, electronic waste recycling, and stewardship of public green spaces.

The organization focuses on providing opportunities for all New Yorkers to learn about the environmental issues that the city faces. Furthermore, it also provides resources and solutions for addressing these issues.
