ORGANIZATION: Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum

The museum offers a full slate of events and educational programs and serves more than 30 school districts. Located in the Old Erie Canal State Park, just east of Syracuse in Central New York.

Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum is seeking adults to work as museum educators in an Award-winning hands-on museum education program. Scripts and training provided. Program is held both inside and outside, incorporates archeology and hands on activities. Some kneeling, bending and standing required. Elementary and some middle school students. Hours range from 9am-2pm, usually 4 hours/day, M-F. Choice of days available.

Preferred experience: Bachelor’s degree, education background or experience working with groups of children.

What: Indoor/Outdoor Hands-on Education Program

Who: Mostly 4 th grade school groups, 2 nd grade - 7 th grade possible

How: Museum provided script, training available, site and hands-on activities provided!

Program highlights: Mapping Activities: A short history of the Erie Canal, the historic background of Chittenango Landing, Living and building a canal boat and hands-on activities. Archaeology: You will show the students the steps of archaeology, let the students discuss the significance of their findings and the role excavation plays in the preservation and the rebuilding of this site. Some bending/kneeling required. Walk-on Canal Boat: learn about boat building and repair and life on a canal boat, caulk a canal boat, perform chores in the boat’s living quarters.

Group Size: 15 - 25 students per group

Standing, walking and possibly kneeling required.

Mission Statement

The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, through the preservation, reproduction, construction and interpretation of the Chittenango Landing industrial complex will provide the opportunity to learn of the construction and repair of canal boats and the social history of the Erie Canal era.

Description

The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum is the site of the only dry docks still in existence along the old Erie Canal in Central New York.

Visitors can view and learn about life and work along the Old Erie Canal in the 1800's in our new visitor / education center and library.

Visit the Canal Store where canal boat families bought their supplies. See displays of how life was along the Erie Canal in the 1800's

Visit the Saw mill, mule barn and mechanical shop.

Watch the blacksmith heat iron in his forge and pound it into the tools and parts needed for building and repairing the canal boats.

Examine an 80% size scale canal boat in cutaway view to learn how the boats on the Erie Canal were constructed and how families lived and worked on their boats.

View artifacts from our archaeological digs.

Conduct your own archeological search and see what you can dig up from the past. (You must leave what you find for our researchers)

Pretend you are a young teen boy or girl hired to be a canal boat driver, Hoggee, and walk for miles along the tow path. It’s only 360+ miles more to go!

Space is available for rent in our new visitor / education center for your next meeting or party.
