SYREN

SYREN Modern Dance is currently seeking a highly skilled individual to serve as Development Intern. A recent graduate or grad student would be a good fit. Position would involve working 10-15 hours per week for 6 months. The Intern will aid in all aspects of the development process. Candidate will work
alongside the Directors and Board to develop new strategies for the
organization. Candidate will help seek and sustain funding for SYREN
Modern Dance. Responsibilities include identifying appropriate
grantors, corporations, and individuals to develop financial support
as well as submit proposals. Candidate should have confident phone
demeanor and be willing to meet with potential funders. A genuine
interest in the Arts is crucial, but candidate need not have background in
dance. Candidate should reside with the boroughs of NYC. Start date
flexibility, but ideally between April 1 and June 1. While the position is unpaid, the Intern will have inside access to all aspects of the inner-workings of a non-profit. He/she will work directly with Directors and gain insight, experience, and resume references. We look forward
to getting to know the right candidate and working to develop
successful new strategies for SYREN. Please send short letter of
inquiry to info@syrendance.org . More information about the organization: www.syrendance.org

About SYREN MODERN DANCE

Location:

470 MALCOLM X BLVD APT 17H, NEW YORK, NY 10037, US

Mission Statement

SYREN Modern Dance is a New York based company founded in 2003 by Lynn Peterson and Kate St. Amand. Using live music and collaborations with visual artists, they bring vivid work to audiences from New York to Paris. SYREN has been presented at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Symphony Space, Dance Theater Workshop, Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity, Sacred Music at the Red Door, Bach Society Houston, Green Space, Cité Universitaire, The Riverside Theatre, Queens Theatre in the Park, Dancers Responding to AIDS, The Warner Theatre, New Haven Ballet, and The Ethel Walker School, among others. It has been supported by grants from NYC’s Department of Cultural Affairs, Queens Council on the Arts, Harkness Space Grants (92nd Street Y), residencies at DanceNOW/NYC’s Silo and DTW’s Outer/Space, and was commissioned by Purchase College.

Description

SYREN has worked with students at Purchase College, Mark Morris Dance Center, Yale University, Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts, Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts, Westminster School, The Hartt School, Anderson University, IONA College, METdance, and Ballet Theatre Company, among others . SYREN enjoys engaging in " Dance on Canvas ", a Partnership with the Art Students League of NY. This is a series of gallery-based rehearsals where visual artists capture the company’s dynamic motion in oil, charcoal and ink. In 2009, this Partnership sparked a relationship between SYREN and artist Xéna Lee who became inspired to create a painting that would become the backdrop for the dance "the last of the leaves". SYREN is inspired to be in its 14th season of working to bring beauty, tenderness, and power through dance to students and audiences everywhere.
