MIKE Program
MIKE Program is a youth-focused health science education program that develops knowledge and social-emotional skills in underserved youth, cultivates personal and community engagement for health promotion, expands the number of diverse and culturally-competent health professionals, and prepares youth to be health advocates for themselves and future generations.

Come learn more about MIKE Program's unique, mentored health science education program in the Portland Metro area.

You can help by joining us at the MIKE Program office alone or with colleagues to help stuff, hand address, and stamp envelopes. We will launch our donation procurement for An Autumn Evening, MIKE’s one annual fundraising gala.

We invite you to be a big help while having fun, meet like-minded people, make a difference, learn more about your community, and, if interested, how you may join as a volunteer MIKE mentor this fall.

We will provide tasty snacks and all necessary materials in a pleasant, small-office setting.

Mission Statement

MIKE's mission is to mentor and educate underserved students to lead healthy lives personally, in their school community, and beyond. How does MIKE achieve its mission? MIKE is building lifelong opportunities for students more likely to live in communities made vulnerable to health disparities by guiding them toward healthy lifestyles, equipping them and their mentors with leadership skills and engaging health professionals in career mentoring.

Description

MIKE delivers mentored health education for high school students to address the increasing impact of adverse health outcomes and health disparities. Our work is often focused in communities of color, lower-income areas, and in rural populations.

At MIKE, it all begins by connecting high school students with near-age mentors, who serve as role models, guides and influencers. MIKE recruits, trains and places high-caliber volunteer mentors with the students in their school health classes once a week for an entire academic semester. We strive to match mentors who reflect the cultures and experiential backgrounds of the students.

Most MIKE mentors are pursuing and/or working in healthcare professions, so they are more able to introduce and provide insight into a variety of career options. MIKE's cutting-edge curriculum focuses on an expanded portfolio of health topics, including nutrition, mental health, physical activity, chronic disease prevention, social justice, access to healthcare and healthy foods and the impact of COVID-19 on their lives and the community. MIKE also incorporates current public health issues into the programming, providing students with opportunities to voice their thoughts, ideas and concerns.

Primary Benefits of MIKE's programming include:

  • Health education
  • Introducing youth to a variety healthcare career options
  • Providing important social connections through meaningful mentor relationships
