POSITION SUMMARY

A Patient Visit Volunteer is a regular volunteer who conducts patient visits at the VA Medical Center delivering care and comfort items to veterans. A Patient Visit Volunteer may also help veterans with tasks such as reading their mail or writing a letter for them. The volunteer may also have the opportunity to sit with patients, to keep them company or listen to a story.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Visit patients on various units of the VA hospital on a regular basis.

• Distribute donated items (when available) to patients and/or family members (e.g. blankets, comfort kits, hygiene products)

• Work through the VAVS office to coordinate visits and distributions

• Maintain confidentiality and adhere to VA rules.

• Abide by and support the philosophy, policy, and guidelines of Soldiers’ Angels.

• Participate in training or orientation as needed.

• Keep careful records of hours volunteered and items distributed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

No experience is necessary, just a deep appreciation for veterans and a willingness to help.

In addition, the Patient Visit Volunteer should be:

• Enthusiastic about working with veterans

• Comfortable in a hospital setting (where some veterans are very sick or disabled)

• Organized, flexible, and willing to help as needed

• Dependable

• Personable and have good communication skills (including good listening skills)

• Empathic, kind, and having a positive attitude.

Must be willing to go through the VA hospital’s VAVS application and orientation process
