A Patient Visit Volunteer is a regular volunteer who conducts patient visits at the VA Medical Center delivering care and comfort items to veterans. A Patient Visit Volunteer may also help veterans with tasks such as reading their mail or writing a letter for them. The volunteer may also have the opportunity to sit with patients, to keep them company or listen to a story.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Visit patients on various units of the VA hospital on a regular basis.
Distribute donated items (when available) to patients and/or family members (e.g. blankets, comfort kits, hygiene products)
Work through the VAVS office to coordinate visits and distributions
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to VA rules.
Abide by and support the philosophy, policy, and guidelines of Soldiers’ Angels.
Participate in training or orientation as needed.
Keep careful records of hours volunteered and items distributed.
No experience is necessary, just a deep appreciation for veterans and a willingness to help.
In addition, the Patient Visit Volunteer should be:
Enthusiastic about working with veterans
Comfortable in a hospital setting (where some veterans are very sick or disabled)
Organized, flexible, and willing to help as needed
Personable and have good communication skills (including good listening skills)
Empathic, kind, and having a positive attitude.
Must be willing to go through the VA hospital’s VAVS application and orientation process
