Volunteer Board Member "Advisory Council"
The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Center of San Diego seeks (3) three dynamic council members to round out its Advisory Council of 15. The Council is a diverse group of caring business and community leaders from diverse fields such as medical, banking, finance, and education who are committed to serving youth, families, and seniors through athletics, arts, education, spiritual and personal development. The Council is particularly interested in applicants with experience in business, ministry, finance, marketing, communications, individual fundraising, writing, law, medical and wellness, education, non-profit, &/or community center programming.
The Advisory Council advances the work of The Salvation Army Kroc Center through mission-based advocacy, cultivation of strategic relationships, direct and indirect financial support, and organizational leadership (ethical, fiscal, etc.). While day-to-day operations are led by The Executive Director/Corps Officer and Director of Operations the Council-Executive Staff’s relationship is an essential partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Council in organizational activity is critical.
Time Commitment:
Monthly Council Meetings: (10) Annually on the second Tuesday (7:30-8:45 a.m.)
Service Opportunity:
November: Senior Thanksgiving meal (optional)
December (in place of meeting): Christmas toy warehouse &/or volunteering to ring the bell
Events:
December: Annual Council Appreciation luncheon
&/or the Kettle Kick Off with Psych and LA Law’s Corbin Bernsen
(Tickets start at $150) (Goes towards your annual giving)
June: Donor Appreciation Event (Saturday Luncheon)
Key Council Responsibilities
Council Commitment and Participation:
- Provide oversight and strategic advice, set policy, develop resources to fulfill The Salvation Army’s mission, and refrain from delegating to staff and engaging in daily management issues. Be informed about the mission, policies, and programs as well as developments in the field of community centers.
- Be an advocate and ambassador for TSA Kroc Center to raise our visibility and attract resources and patrons and suggesting possible Council nominees who can make significant contributions to the work of the Council and the Kroc Center.
- Consistently attend and actively participate the Kroc’s monthly Council meetings the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30-8:45 a.m. We go dark in July, August, and December. There is a December volunteer service activity in the Christmas Toy Warehouse or ringing the bell with other council members outside of community businesses. Council meetings are held at the Kroc Center at 6845 University, Avenue, San Diego, CA 92115. Members have an additional optional opportunity to serve on the Finance, Program, Property, or Public Relations Committee.
- Kroc Council Members must consider the organization a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that the Kroc Center can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, corporate sponsors, organizations, and individuals, Kroc Center expects to enjoy 100% of Council Members to "give or get" contributions totaling a minimum of $2,000 per year. The Kroc Center has two main fundraising campaigns annually the Heroes Annual Scholarship Campaign and the Christmas Kettle Campaign.
Council terms and participation
- ยท Council Members would serve a three-year term and be eligible for an optional re-appointment.
Desired Qualifications:
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s mission. Selected Council Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the non-profit sector. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Council Members.
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
- Experience in one of the following areas: business, ministry, finance, marketing, communications, individual fundraising, writing, law, medical and wellness, non-profit, education, &/or community center programming
- Share The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s values of integrity, credibility and compassion.
- Belief in The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s mission and strong passion for serving low income neighborhoods.
- Developed people skills and affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
- Previous board experience or exposure desired, but not required
- Familiarity with basic financial reporting

FOR FINANCE COMMITTEE POSITION:
We're looking to bring on (2) two to (3) three finance committee members with a finance and / or accounting background to help us make diligent decisions about our financial strategy. The finance committee, currently 3 members, meets at least 3 times year to review and recommend the budget, fiscal year end statement of activities, and the audit.

The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center is a 12.4-acre family support, education, recreation, and cultural arts center. The community center serves residents of East San Diego, La Mesa and Lemon Grove with a variety of quality programs for individuals of all ages.
Development of the Kroc Center was made possible by a $90 million combined capital and endowment grant from a bequest to The Salvation Army by the late Mrs. Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc.
