Help edit advice-oriented health and medical pieces on topics related to Addiction, Cancer, HIV/AIDS, Medical Marijuana, Neurology and Sleep Medicine. Editors should be able to review in-depth articles and guide readers on understanding diagnosis, treatment options and more.

We are looking for editors to review one to two 800 to 1,100-word pieces a week. Topics are directed towards various audiences including patients and healthcare professionals.

Requirements:

• Ability to edit materials to ensure conformity with established grammar, punctuation, and spelling rules, and adherence to AP and other style guidelines
• Edit articles of varying complexity (mostly basic, targeting health consumers) and collaborate with writers to ensure accuracy and fact-checking as needed.
• Help improve clarity, accuracy, format, style, and consistency
• Samples/Portfolio of prior editing/writing (health writing a plus)
• Expertise and knowledge of medical conditions
• Experience editing for a consumer publication a plus
• Ability to turn in work well within deadlines and set deadlines for others

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s OR 3 years of experience with healthcare communications editing
• Experience communicating technical information to non-technical audiences

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in life sciences or clinical sciences
• Bachelor’s Degree in English, journalism, communications or media
• Advanced Degree in life sciences field
• Experience as a medical editor/writer
• Experience as an editor/writer in the biopharmaceutical or pharmaceutical industry
• Knowledge of evidence-based medicine research techniques and programs
• Experience generating/editing publications, from blogs to both non-peer-reviewed and peer-reviewed scientific articles

Location

Depending on the volunteering opportunity, some or all of the volunteering may be done remotely with communication via email and phone rather than in-person.
