Hostelling International USA (HI USA) is a nonprofit, member organization founded on an enduring belief in the power of travel to foster a deeper understanding of people, places, and the world around. HI New York is the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to youth travel in New York, and the largest hostel in North America.
Community Expressions:
Community Expressions is a collaboration between HI USA, organizations and schools serving local community youth. The program allows students to consider their culture and explore the issues that may affect a community. Students participate in a series of lessons at their school and then at the hostel that analyze their own neighborhood demographics, identify leaders and role models who have made positive impacts on their communities and explore various ways that they could help create positive and sustainable local change. Students then create artistic expressions which celebrate points of pride in their cultures and communities.
At the hostel, students get the chance to share their cultural and community pride with an audience of travelers from around the world and practice essential career-readiness skills to an adult audience. The program culminates into an overnight stay at the hostel, which helps them start to build the skills necessary for studying and traveling abroad.
Cultural Kitchen:
Work with New York City youth at Hostelling International New York to prepare an ethnic meal, promote cross-cultural understanding, and facilitate interaction between students and world travelers with the hostel's Cultural Kitchen program. The education volunteer will be on site are needed on evenings of the dinners. Cooking expertise is not a requirement for this volunteer position! Rather, you should be motivated to interact positively with high school-age youth and share your travel stories with them and with other travelers from around the world.
International Ingredients:
Participants in HI NY’s International Ingredients program will learn the history behind cuisine from around the world and how those ingredients have shaped the cultures where the dishes are present. Participants will satisfy their cuisine curiosity while preparing the dish in the hostel kitchen. Modules and topics include The best places to buy food, regional plants, animals, and spices, colonialism and empire, socio-economic class and cuisine and food and culture.
Study Abroad 101:
This program is designed to provide students with the information they need to to make their Study Abroad plans a reality. SA 101 also provides the students with an overnight experience that bears resemblance to an actual evening while studying abroad. Student will cook a communal meal together, interact with international guests and have full access to hostel guest activities and amenities7 More opportunities with Hostelling International New York
