Soutpansberg Flat Lizard
Soutpansberg Flat Lizard a highly restricted endemic.

Lajuma Research Centre is part of the newly proclaimed Luvhondo Private Nature Reserve and situated within larger UNESCO Vhembe Biosphere Reserve.

Based high up in the hilly upper-reaches of the western Soutpansberg, Lajuma Research Centre part of the Luvhondo Private Nature Reserve, boasts beautiful scenery and many habitat types: including montane forests and grasslands, clear mountain streams with waterfalls, and a remarkable diversity of plants and animals.

Operating from Lajuma is the Soutpansberg Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation (SCBC), an independent research and conservation organisation currently working in collaboration with and hosted by Lajuma Research Centre. Between running independent projects, Lajuma Research Centre and Soutpansberg Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation also collaborate on the Western Soutpansberg Biodiversity Project in association with University of Venda: thus we are able to offer and facilitate a wide number of research projects.

Some popular research streams which we have established long-term studies on include: Guinea Fowl Behaviour and Ecology, Hyrax Behaviour and Ecology, Mammalian Seed Dispersal, Forest Biodiversity Conservation and Reptile Diversity and Ecology, Amphibian Diversity and Ecology. Other projects offered include: Scorpionology; Myriapodology (Centipedes and Millipedes); Ornithology; Mycology and Lichen; Entomology; Botany; Rodentology and Forest Biodiversity.

Suitable for interns, post graduate students or any students who have to complete a thesis or dissertation as part of their degree: the SCBC, Western Soutpansberg Biodiversity Project and Lajuma Research Centre are always willing to facilitate new areas of research; making it an ideal space for your dream project.

About Soutpansberg Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation

Location:

Medike Mountain Reserve, Soutpansberg, Louis Trichardt, Limpopo 0920, ZA

Mission Statement

We are an independent biodiversity research centre, with a strong environmental and conservation sense. We are studying reptiles, scorpions and general invertebrates in order to catalouge and conserve biodiversity in the Soutpansberg and Greater Soutpansberg region, Limpopo South Africa.

Description

The Soutpansberg Centre For Biodiversity and Conservation is an independent, not-for-profit research and conservation organization based in the biodiversity rich Soutpansberg range, Limpopo Province, South Africa.

Established in 2014, as a vehicle to catalogue the biodiversity of understudied animals in the region, the Soutpansberg Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation (SCBC) is an on-going an d evolving project. The project’s primary objectives are to find and identify neglected, overlooked and understudied organisms in the Soutpansberg area; generating an inventory of species to assist researchers, conservationists, landowners and interested members of the public in understanding the richness of this 'biodiversity hotspot’. Presently the SCBC is focused on reptiles, amphibians and scorpions. Searching for these organisms results in a lot of 'by-catch’ and activities have grown to include: Theraphosidae (baboon spiders) and allies, Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies), Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) and small mammals.
