If you love animals and nature, volunteering at The Haven at Skanda is a serene and beautiful way to make a real difference for rescued animals.
Animal sanctuaries are included in essential services during the COVID-19 crisis, and Skanda is following strict biosecurity and social distancing practices at the farm.
The Haven at Skanda is an all-volunteer 501c3 nonprofit organization that receives rescued farm animals from all over the country and provides them with a safe, supportive home to emerge from the abuse and neglect they have survived, and emerge as who they really are.
The animals presently living at Skanda include horses, goats, miniature donkeys, pigs, chickens, and ducks.
Volunteer activities includes feeding meals, mucking stalls and cleaning coops, grooming, and all aspects of nonprofit administration including fundraising, marketing, and special events. We also have gardening opportunities in good weather, and we always need volunteers with tractor and repair/construction experience.
Much of the animal care requires at least some physical strength (lifting bales of hay, carrying buckets of water, mucking stalls) and provides a great workout in beautiful surroundings.
We also offer animal care activities that are physically easier, and we make space for everyone who wants to participate no matter your physical abilities or limitations. Administrative help and fundraising help is always needed. We are all-volunteer and always need donations and fundraising ideas.
Volunteering begins with an information session/orientation, which usually lasts about 90 minutes. Email: ellen@thehavenatskanda.org to sign up for an orientation.
Please note: volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

Mission Statement
The Haven at Skanda provides a loving home to rescued farm animals, rescued horses, and endangered species where they can relax, live in their own natural rhythms, and emerge into who they really are. The Haven offers programs for kids and adults where they can experience the brilliance of animals, and discover new possibilities.
Description
The Haven at Skanda cares for our region's most vulnerable rescued and endangered animals, and provides public programs teaching deep sensitivity to animals, animal care, and organic gardening, to encourage a more compassionate, caring world in which we support animals and nature.
We focus on preventive education and services, so that we as a community can provide support to animal owners at the first signs of difficulty, so that no animal need suffer, and we reduce the number of animals going to auction or needing rescue. We offer innovative programs for kids that combine animal care with organic gardening to encourage empathy, teamwork, healthy eating, a plant-based diet, and connection to community. All our programs are designed to encourage humans to learn from animals and nature, and discover new possibilities.
We are an all-volunteer organization, building our volunteer corps and always looking for volunteers to help with animal care, nonprofit management, special events, and gardening projects. We survive on donations, and all donations are fully tax-deductible. For more information on how to get involved: https://www.thehavenatskanda.org or 315-815-5056.
