Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to volunteer. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll provide students with positive support and feedback as they work.
This workshop needs your support at an elementary school in Fort Greene:

First-graders read Sofi and the Magic, Musical Mural by Raquel Ortiz, the story of a girl transported through a magical mural to her native Puerto Rico, where she describes what she sees as she flies over a celebration. Students chose a celebration or holiday from their own culture and, imagining they’re flying like Sofi, will write about what they'd see, hear, smell, taste, and touch during the experience. Writing coaches will assist small groups in editing their final drafts.
