ORGANIZATION: The Jules and Doris Stein UCLA Support Group

  • 1 person is interested

The JSEI Affiliates, the volunteer arm of the UCLA Stein Eye Institute, is currently recruiting optometrists and ophthalmologists to volunteer for one (2-4) hour shift once a month, Tuesday - Thursday mornings or afternoon, for the organization’s Preschool Vision Screenings (PSVS) program. Desired candidates must enjoy working with preschool aged children and must be willing to travel to the Westside and San Fernando Valley preschools. Pediatric experience is not required.

Volunteer Vision Professional station involves the following:

  • Review Acuity distance test and RetinoMax3 results
  • Cover test for presence of strabismus
  • Retinoscopy for presence of abnormal refractive error and/or confirm RetinoMax3 results that are beyond pass range
  • After vision tests completed, the medical professional will record either a pass or refer
  • Thereafter will than forward the child to receive a sticker station

The Affiliates provide vision screenings to various Head Start and low income preschools as well as to several local private preschools to identify young children who have refractive errors or eye muscle problems. Having a professional at each screening to check for the presence of strabismus and to determine the presence of abnormal refractive errors has allowed the Affiliates to offer a more comprehensive vision screening to many children who could otherwise not afford an eye exam. The acuity test and the auto-refractor Retinomax screening are administered by trained layperson volunteers, however if the child does not pass these screening tests, the volunteer will rely on the volunteer vision professional to further examine the child and refer them if needed to receive a full eye exam.

For further information on our Preschool Vision Screening program and how to become a JSEI Affiliates volunteer, please respond to Egbert@jsei.ucla.edu or 310.206.7128. We look forward to your participation.
