Open Heart Magic has grown to reach over 11,000 kids this past year at ten Chicago children’s hospitals and two new out of state programs at the University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital in Michigan and the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
Along with this growth comes the need to bring on additional volunteer Board of Directors staff for expansion and necessary nonprofit administration. With that in the face of an ever changing human resources and compensation requirements, Open Heart Magic’s Board is looking to bring on a professional to help the Executive Director and Treasurer manage human resources processes and compensation reviews to build the organizational foundation and team to continue to grow to reach more kids.
In additional to Open Heart Magic Board of Directors requirements, this role will be involved in the following activities:
The volunteer Director of Human Resources shall be the lead human resources officer of Open Heart Magic reviewing the following:
* Human resource policies related to staff and volunteers.
* Compensation and benefits matters related to employees of the Open Heart
Magic working with the Executive Director on compensation and benefits in
the form of recommendations to the Executive Committee and budgeting
provided to the Board Treasurer and Executive Director.
* All vendor relationships including benefits, employee insurances, retirement
plan administrators, and compensation data providers.
* Reviewing and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local
employment laws with support of Katten pro-bono legal counsel.

Description
Open Heart Magic (OHM) is a Chicago based 501(c)(3) children’s charity focused on improving the medical experience for sick kids in hospitals.
Our specially-trained volunteer Hospital Magicians visit children and teens in pediatrics and use magic to engage and empower kids dealing with challenging medical situations. The personalized interactions create magical moments to reengage curiosities and give a greater sense of control.
In 2019, Hospital Magicians reached over 12,000 kids at their hospital bedsides. Open Heart Magic currently partners with 14 hospitals in Chicago, Ann Arbor, and Cleveland:
