Purpose

As a companionship volunteer you will spend quality time socializing with a senior resident. You might read aloud, play board games, work on a puzzle, provide assistance with light household tasks, or just chat.

For many of our senior residents leaving their building to socialize can be difficult; this can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Help us to prevent this, build friendships, and improve their quality of life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Spending an hour with a resident weekly
    • Coordinating & suggesting appropriate activities

Length of Assignment & Time Commitment

Ideally we would like a weekly time commitment for a minimum of two months. However we are flexible and open to various time commitments, including monthly volunteering. Contact us to see how you can help.

The mission of the Portsmouth Housing Authority is to be the leader in making quality affordable housing available for low and moderate income members of the community and to accomplish this mission by a fiscally responsible, creative organization committed to excellence.

Description

The Authority provides both family and elderly housing, area-wide Section 8 housing, and a youth and family services program.

Persons whose incomes fall at or below 80% of median income can apply for assisted housing by picking up an application at the Central Office of the PHA located at 245 Middle Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire 03801 or if you are disabled and cannot make it into the office you may call (603) 436-4310 and you will be mailed a copy of the application. You can also access an application on this web site, download it, and send a copy to the office.
