Position Summary: Saturday Academy is seeking instructors with expertise in science, technology, engineering, math or the arts to teach students in grades 2 through 12. We offer classes throughout the Portland Metro area on the weekends, during the week and before or after school.

Our class sizes are kept small (with a maximum of 12 students) in order to offer individualized instruction. Classes are hands-on, project-oriented and taught by community experts. Currently the open-enrollment and school-based programs are looking for instructors. We ask that Saturday Academy instructors have and/or are working on a graduate or doctoral degree a graduate or doctoral degree focused on STEM/STEAM. We are seeking instructors for the following subjects:

  • Physics (ex. LEGO Physics)
  • LEGO Robotics (using Mindstorms, EV2 and WeDo software)
  • Engineering (ex. Creating Catapults, Rube Goldberg)
  • Computer Technology (Scratch, Graphic Art, Stop Motion Animation, Python, and Website Design)
  • Arts (painting, sculpture, acting, printmaking and cartooning)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate fun, hands-on, curiosity-based learning experiences
  • Design class curriculum and/or teach existing curriculum/lessons
  • Agree and teach classes you can fully commit to
  • Abide by the guidelines and policies for Saturday Academy instructors, including using our online instructor dashboard

Qualifications:

  • Have and/or are working on Bachelors, Masters, Doctoral degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or the arts (no teaching certificate required)
  • Career experience in the field to be taught (academic or corporate sector)
  • Comfort and ease with classroom management tools
  • Passion for inspiring students

Description

The mission of Saturday Academy is to engage children through in-depth learning so they may become life-long learners. We provide hands-on classes and camps, afterschool programs, accelerated learning programs for talented and gifted students, and a high school apprenticeship program in science and engineering (ASE). Since it was founded in 1983, SA has served over 165,000 students and currently serves approximately 6,000 students each year. SA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization affiliated with the University of Portland (UP). Instructors need to be experts in their fields so that children see adults as guides to learning and careers.
