Mission Statement

EIN # 14-1470087 The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum is a center for nature with a focus on environmental education and a mission to develop responsible caretakers of the natural world. It uses its living collections of native animals, natural habitats and trails to present a wide variety of programs and exhibits for people of all ages. Its YIMBY Program (Yes, In My Backyard) encourages individuals and families to take personal actions to promote a healthy environment.

Description

The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum has two locations: The Wildlife Education Center at 25 Boulevard, Cornwall on Hudson, NY, and the Outdoor Discovery Center at Kenridge Farm Drive, Cornwall (off of state route 9W). This facility has 177 acres and was a former, historical dairy farm.

The Wildlife Education Center houses an exhibition gallery (seasonal and special exhibits) and a gallery with live regional animal species. There is a hiking trail attached to the center. Education programs are presented for area students.

The Outdoor Discovery Center houses the Museum's pre-K program for three and four olds. The students receive a curriculum that prepares them for kindergarten plus lessons in science. They enjoy the outdoors during the school day.

There is a good-sized wetlands area, two farm ponds, a sugar bush area where Maple Sugaring programs are held during February and March, several hiking trails that are accessible from dawn to dusk, a Hiking Quest program that teaches, through signage and an available educational booklet, many nature aspects. We hold a Hike A Thon fundraiser each spring. Hikers procure sponsors and many times hike in groups.

The Museum's summer nature camp program is held at the Outdoor Discovery Center. Participants are grouped by school age and receive instruction about various aspects of nature.
