Mission Statement
The mission of The Painted Turtle is to provide a year-round, life-changing environment and authentic camp experience for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. The Painted Turtle supports children’s medical needs, inspires them to reach beyond their illnesses, and provides care, education, and respite for their families. All campers and families attend completely free of charge. Campers at The Painted Turtle enjoy a fun, safe, and adaptive environment where all activities are designed to accommodate campers with medical concerns. At Camp, children are empowered to learn about their own medical care and are given the confidence to become more independent. Each session is grouped by similar diagnoses, where campers are surrounded by others who can understand their challenges. The community at Camp transcends the days that campers spend there, leading to friendships that create a feeling of inclusion and connection outside of Camp.
Description
The Painted Turtle is more than a camp - it’s a place where children with serious medical conditions can just be kids.
Children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses arrive looking for a typical camp experience, and what they discover is confidence, belonging, and a feeling of acceptance that lasts long after they head home. For many campers, their camp experience is the best time of the year. For their families, The Painted Turtle provides unparalleled care, education, and well-needed respite. All programs are always completely free of charge.
Since opening in 2004, The Painted Turtle has provided more than 60,000 camp experiences to children with serious medical conditions and family members through year-round camp programming. As a member of the SeriousFun Children’s Network founded by Paul Newman, The Painted Turtle is part of a network of the finest multi-disease medical camps and programs - serving hundreds of thousands of children and families around the globe.
