Oakwood Marathon Gardens

Marathon Oakwood Heights Garden Volunteers will have the opportunity to work and collect the bounty of this 320 Sq ft raised bed garden near the wildlife refuge on the Rouge River. Garden volunteers can come any time as long as it is arranged at least 24 hours in advance so supplies can be retrieved from the nearby shed. Large groups can be accomodated here as there is vast open space. Volunteers may determine planting, watering and feeding of their plants and may harvest and distribute the bounty of the garden in any way they so choose. Soil, seeds, fertilizer, water, gloves and garden tools are provided by Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision. This is a great opportunity for those interested in gardening without having to invest anything but time.

  • Gardening is great for the mind and body
  • Gardening is a great learning opportunity for children
  • Gardening can provide extra food needed at home
  • Gardening is a great social activity

There are also free land use opportunities in this area for those with an interest in urbanized commercial farming.
