In the Des Moines refugee community, some elder individuals lack literacy in their own language. As they study English, some may also be learning to write their name for the first time. Without the English language skills, cultural knowledge or transportation needed to acclimate to their new community, many elder refugees often face isolation in their homes. We partner with individuals ages 60+ to foster community connections and improve quality of life.
LSI encourages our elderly refugee clients to attend the Central Senior Center on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. They gather for crafts, games, informal learning times, and also utilize the wonderful spaces in the building (billiards, a computer lab, craft room, and exercise room). Volunteers are needed to teach our students how to play billiard and help organize a tournament. Our ESL Activities Specialist will provide support which will enable you to comfortably interact with our clients.
Hours are flexible. Anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays.
