Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.

No experience or training is necessary to work with students. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll engage them and encourage their progress on a project.

This workshop needs your support at an elementary school in Bed-Stuy. To sign up, please contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code:

Date: Friday, March 31st, 2017
Time: 11:20 AM - 12:55 PM
Volunteer Role: Writing Coach

Overview: Seventh graders read Secret Saturdays by Torrey Maldonado, who conducted workshops with the students in advance of writing coaches helping them in the classroom. The Brooklyn-based book’s main character keeps a secret from his best friend: He’s ashamed because, instead of spending Saturdays with his friends, he visits his father in jail. Coaches will support students writing about what’s behind keeping a secret and how it affects their lives.
