Work Location: Marketing and Communications Department

Job Description: The Mariners’ Museum is seeking a Marketing & Communications intern to assist with a variety of job duties in the department. The intern will attend Museum related events as a Museum representative and manage online calendar listings, among other office-based tasks within the department.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage online calendars of events listings to promote events in the community
  • Assist with festival outreach and at special events
  • Assist with promotions to market museum events and exhibitions
  • Archive all news/media coverage
  • Manage brochure distribution to travel leads and information centers
  • Build community contact lists as needed
  • Help edit the Ahoy! Magazine
  • Other duties as assigned, may include cross-departmental opportunities
  • Must be available for some evening and weekend job duties
Hours per Semester: 120 hours total, 10-20 hours per week. Must be available for some evening and weekend job duties.

Intern Stipend: $250 upon internship completion.

Appropriate Educational Requirement: Some college studies

Required Skills: Valid driver’s license. Interest in marketing, communications, public relation and special events; attention to detail; experience with Word and PC based computer programs; flexible and willing to work and learn!

Description

Today, The Mariners’ Museum sits in an urban oasis - the 550 acre park is now home to the 167-acre Lake Maury and the Noland Trail - a five-mile shoreline trail with fourteen bridges. Within the Museum itself you will find 90,000 square feet of exhibition galleries including the prestigious International Small Craft Center, and the award-winning USS Monitor Center. This state-of-the-art exhibition and conservation lab houses 210 tons of artifacts from the Civil War ironclad Monitor, which were recovered from NOAA’s Monitor National Marine Sanctuary.
The Mariners’ Museum Library and Archives is now housed in the Trible Library on the campus of Christopher Newport University, which is adjacent to The Mariners’ Museum Park. The Library is home to over 78,000 books; 800,000 photographs, films, and negatives; and over 1 million pieces of archival material, making it the largest maritime library in the Western Hemisphere.
