The Newport Back Bay has a lot of trash in it since the rains in early 2017 and now we want to remove it. Volunteers must wear sturdy shoes that can get dirty or water shoes or boots are even better. We will meet at Southwind Kayaks (100 N Bayside Dr Newport Beach, CA 92660) and it is not the easiest place to meet so make sure you understand where it is. There is a bridge on Pacific Coast Highway at the intersection of N. Bayside drive and Pacific Coast Highway. It is on the south side of the bridge. It is best if you look at a map first. If traveling south on Coast Highway you go over the bridge and turn left onto N. Bayside drive and then make your 1st left onto a private road. You then will go to the end of the parking lot and see the Southwind Kayak shop. That's where we meet. 9 A. M. sharp. If traveling north on Pacific Coast Highway you turn right before the bridge and then left onto the private road. Please come early because we leave the Kayak shop and will not be nearby soon after. If under the age of 18 you must bring a waiver signed by your parent/guardian to the event. You can find a waiver at https://newportbeach.surfrider.org/beach-cleanups/

We supply the bags and gloves. All volunteers should dress for the weather and bring personal items such as sun block.

Mission Statement

The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education

Description

Surfrider Strategic Initiatives
The core activities and campaigns that the Surfrider Foundation uses to protect our oceans, waves and beaches fall into the categories of Clean Water, Beach Access, Beach Preservation and Protecting Special Places. Through conservation like using a reusable shopping bag instead of a single use plastic bag and a thermos instead of a single use plastic cup or bottle we help reduce waste that inevitably ends up in a landfill or worse the ocean. Through Activism like sharing conservation programs with others, our mission grows and takes new life. Through Research like with our water test programs we keep knowledgeable about the current state of the beach and its health. Through education we make others aware of the important work that needs to be done in order to keep the Beaches healthy and accessible. It's not all about surfing. It's about keeping the environment healthy so that the surf will still be there for tomorrow.
