Trainmen (and women) needed!

ORGANIZATION: Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum

  • 4 people are interested

An ongoing, year-round opportunity exists for Trainmen, and women at the Heart of Dixie Railroad museum, as staff aboard the Calera & Shelby operating railroad.

Trainmen, also known as Car Hosts or Car Attendants, greet the passengers, punch their tickets, assist them in boarding, and ensure the safety of the passengers during the scheduled train rides.

Museum membership is required, and there are some basic uniform requirements, but the work, if it can be called that is easy and fun.

Both formal and on the job training is provided, and Trainmen are needed year round. Whether you are available throughout the season, or simply for one or more of our events, we're always in need of additional volunteers! Training is provided, and while most events occur on weekends, there are opportunities generally on Thursdays, when we host school groups, senior, and church groups. A general listing of our events throughout the year is available on our website: www.hodrrm.org

The Trainman position is the entry level railroading position and depending on one's interest and abilities can lead to advancement as a Brakeman, then to Conductor, and possibly even Engineer!

Mission Statement

The Heart of Dixie, Official Railroad Museum for the State of Alabama, is dedicated to preserving the golden age of railroading.

Description

All Aboard! The Heart of Dixie is a not-for-profit group of volunteers who share a love of railroading. It was organized in 1963 as a chapter of the National Railway Historical Society and is dedicated to the preservation and operation of historically significant railway equipment. Visitors see railroad artifacts and memorabilia in a restored depot. Locomotives, railcars and signals are displayed in a living monument to railroad history. The golden age of railroads and the rich heritage of the people who built and operated them become real as visitors ride the train along six miles of restored L&N track. All revenues from passenger fares, merchandise sales, and donations are used for restoration projects and railroad operations. Membership is available to anyone interested in supporting the museum either financially or through participation in museum and railroad operations. No previous railroad experience necessary!
