Safe Routes to School Team At Maybury

Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision is looking for a team of dedicated volunteers who want to dedicate at least 2 hours, 1 day a week for the next 3 months to community organizing efforts around Bennett Elementary and Maybury Elementary in Southwest Detroit. Neighborhood Outreach Interns will be talking with a diverse group of Detroiters to gather data that will be used to improve the walking and bicycle riding conditions of these two school neighborhoods. Both neighborhoods are largely Spanish speaking, and though not by any means required, volunteers who speak Spanish fluently are highly valued in this position. This is an unpaid opportunity but will provide many skill building opportunities for young people interested in politics, business, and community organizing work. Your service will also provide you with advanced notice of any openings that are created in the future with our organization.

Volunteers will gain experience in:

  • public speaking
  • survey data collection
  • target marketing
  • community organizing
  • translation
  • public policy
  • education
  • transportation planning
