The course provides skills for leading safe, environmentally responsible, and enjoyable hikes. You’ll learn how to handle backcountry medical emergencies, leadership development, and standard policy and procedures for when in the field or front country. Additionally, time is dedicated to how to treat the most common emergency situations. Other important topics include learning to recognize proper gear for the various seasons, map reading and navigation. We also cover how to incorporate practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics no matter hiking in the front or backcountry.
The educational module includes lectures, hands-on applications, and several "trail-based" practice scenarios! This course is excellent for all ranges of hiker abilities, from novice up to very experienced hikers.
The Hike Leader Training will take place on Saturday, March 25 th from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM at the Preserve’s Visitor Center at 3197 Route 44/55, Gardiner, NY. To register or for more information, please contact volunteers@mohonkpreserve.org or 845-255-0919, ext. 1269.
