FRIENDLY VISITOR PROGRAM

As we age, our circle of family and friends can start to shrink due to aging and loss, or because of growing limitations in our ability to get out and about. It is a proven fact that human contact is needed for people to survive. Could you be that nurturing contact to a senior?

OVERVIEW

Friendly Visitor volunteers are matched with seniors in one-to-one relationships. Volunteers visit on a regular basis, weekly or every other week for one to two hours for a minimum of one year. They can go for walks, fix a light snack, run brief errands, and read or help write letters. Friendly Visitors do not help with bathing, managing money, or giving medications, but they will get emergency assistance if the need arises.

MISSION

The mission of the Friendly Visitor Program is to provide elders with meaningful social relationships, provide access to and awareness of local resources, and help older adults maintain self-sufficiency and independence.

OBJECTIVES

* Provide older adults with meaningful, one-on-one relationships with adult volunteers

* Assist older adults to become knowledgeable of and have access to needed resources

* Improve older adults’ day to day lives by assisting with light household duties or errands

* Help older adults maintain self-sufficiency and independence

* Expose older adults to a variety of community activities

Mission Statement

The mission of the Mid-Columbia Council of Governments (MCCOG) is to serve as a forum for intergovernmental cooperation and cost effectiveness by providing joint strategic planning for the provision of services; centralization of expertise which may not be affordable by individual member organizations; and the acquisition of revenue with which to fund programs and services as designated by its Board of Directors and the member governments which they represent.

Description

In 1965, Congress passed the Older Americans Act (OAA) which created structures at the federal, state, and local levels to administer programs for older adults. There are 17 Area Agencies on Aging across Oregon that administer and support community-based care services. AAA’s Advocate for older adults living in their area. AAAs are responsible for analyzing the needs of seniors and assessing the existing services and implementing new services where needed in the region they serve. Region 9’s AAA is a Type A agency, which administers Oregon Project Independence and Older Americans Act programs in Hood River, Wasco, Sherman, Gilliam and Wheeler Counties in the Mid-Columbia Gorge Region.

Our goal is to provide programs and services to maintain and enhance the quality of life to assure that basic needs are met for seniors, and people with disabilities. Most of our programs serve those aged 60 and over.

We provide family supports for family caregivers, assistance with Medicare, connect individuals with limited income and resources to key public benefits and provide short-term intervention to help isolated seniors navigate and access services.

We also serve those who need in-home assistance in order for them to stay in their homes, as well as options counseling to assist the client in making decisions about long-term care. We also provide a customized training for seniors who employ home care workers and how to be an effective employer.
