VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) was founded in 1965 as a national service program to fight poverty in America. In 1993, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs.
Today, more than 46 million Americans live in poverty. AmeriCorps VISTA taps the skills, talents and passion of more than 8,000 Americans annually to support community efforts to overcome poverty.

Member Duties : Research and perform baseline assessments to identify administrative process that limit opportunities for disadvantaged businesses; Review the most recent disparity study conducted by the city to develop various procedures and initiatives to increases disadvantaged business participation; develop and implement an electronic database system where small businesses contracting data can be captured, stored, and extracted to better meet the needs of disadvantaged populations.
Service Description : The mission of the City of Austin's Small and Minority Business Resources Department is to promote and encourage disadvantaged business owners to participate in business opportunities with the City of Austin as well as to assure an equal opportunity for them to compete for contracts and subcontracts awarded by the City. It has been confirmed through recent disparity studies that small firms experience a disadvantage in access to capital through contracting. Limited contracting opportunities result in small businesses not being able to continue business operations or closing their companies. By identifying and creating opportunities, the VISTA position will provide the critical ground work, baseline assessments, outreach and recommendations needed to identify and approve various administrative processes that will help the City identify, grow and maintain disadvantaged businesses in Austin.
