VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) was founded in 1965 as a national service program to fight poverty in America. In 1993, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs.
Today, more than 46 million Americans live in poverty. AmeriCorps VISTA taps the skills, talents and passion of more than 8,000 Americans annually to support community efforts to overcome poverty.

Member Duties:Help increase the number of underserved populations reached by this program; increase and sustain the number of participating high schools in the greater Austin area; develop, test, and refine the programs activities and procedures in order to effectively keep youth actively throughout the year; develop, test, and refine strategies to enhance existing programs to effectively reach their goals, assuring that underserved population groups have the tools to be engaged with both community and city affairs.
Service Description : The mission of the City of Austin Human Resources Department, in which Youth and Family Services is housed, is to attract, engage, develop, support, and retain the best workforce in the country to serve our community. The VISTA project aligns with the CNCS Priority Area for Education, School Readiness, K-12 Success, Post-Secondary Success. The VISTA project will seek to motivate students to be civically engaged by exposing them to the environment of local government. We expect to benefit at least 400 students and their families. The VISTA member will contribute to the goals of the project by creating opportunities for students to interact with elected city officials, searching for non-traditional types of schools to locate students who would not have an opportunity to participate in program, working to get private businesses to partner with the program and more over the course of the year.
