VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) was founded in 1965 as a national service program to fight poverty in America. In 1993, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs.

Today, more than 46 million Americans live in poverty. AmeriCorps VISTA taps the skills, talents and passion of more than 8,000 Americans annually to support community efforts to overcome poverty.

By serving with AmeriCorps VISTA, you can make a tangible difference. And, you’ll find the fulfillment that comes from using your knowledge and skills to help those in disadvantaged circumstances turn their dreams into reality.

Member Duties:

Develop and implement components of the Cities of Service strategic plan to increase service engagement across Austin; promote and collect best practices for volunteer engagement and private philanthropy; conduct outreach and build a public relations presence for service initiatives in targeted underserved communities; develop specific tactics and resources to achieve goals of the strategic plan; increase volunteerism and philanthropy through partnership with community organizations, private foundations and companies; determine the community services needs of targeted underserved neighborhoods; insure community input is a key element of the strategic plan.

The City of Austin’s mission, as defined in the Imagine Austin comprehensive plan, is to become a beacon of sustainability, social equity and economic opportunity for all residents. The VISTA project will seek to build the capacity of the City of Austin to support non-profit service coordination, to ensure services are efficiently delivered, volunteers are recruited and retained, and corporate involvement in service is increased, all with the goal of addressing equity in services and quality of life in our city.
