POPS (Pains of the Prison System) the Club is seeking volunteers to support our in-school club at Sonia Sotomayor High School!
This club is launching soon and expected to run once per week for approximately 30 minutes, however we may need assistance of up to 1 hour to include lunch pick-ups for the club. Please do not apply for this club position if you cannot make it at this time.Contact POPS the Club to apply; do not contact the school regarding this opportunity.
College students and high school graduates, seniors, organizations, and diverse populations are all welcome and encouraged to apply!

INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEER HOURS? JOIN A POPS CLUB!
POPS (Pains of the Prison System) the Club started in 2013 at Venice High School as a method of enhancing the lives of students who have been impacted by incarceration - either through family, friends, or personal history. POPS establishes and sustains high school clubs that offer students community and emotional support as well as opportunities to publish writings and artwork they create through the club. Once a week, POPS students meet for lunch - usually provided for free as a collaboration between POPS Central and a local restaurants - in a safe space where students are able to combat the shame, stigmas, and sorrows they feel and face at their own pace.
This is where you come in!
POPS is expanding! We are actively seeking volunteers to help run and maintain clubs in the following schools:
1. Lawndale High School (Tuesdays at 11:15 - 11:45am)
2. James Monroe High School (Wednesdays at 12:30 - 1pm)
3. LA High School (TBA)
4. Sonia Sotomayor High School (Mondays at 12:35 - 1:05pm)
5. Santa Monica High School (TBA)
6. Culver High School (Tuesdays at 12:30 - 1pm*)
7. Venice High School (Wednesdays at 12:30 - 1pm*)
8. El Camino Real High School (Wednesdays at 12:30 - 1pm*)
9. LA High School for the Arts (Mondays at 12:30 - 1pm)

What will I do as a volunteer?
POPS volunteers help club meetings run as smoothly as possible. Duties include picking up lunches from the local restaurants/providers, helping teacher-sponsors with club management and post-club clean-up, guest speaker scheduling, assisting with the writing program, and more. While your time commitment each week is short, the impact you have on each student is profound!
How do I volunteer?
Attend a volunteer training. Trainings are scheduled typically twice a month, with remote attendance opportunities becoming available. You can attend training at any time, even if you are just interested in coming to learn more about POPS! Sign up here: http://signup.com/go/JLmBia
Each school has their own processes for volunteers, but we will assist you through their process and get you started as quickly as possible.

Mission Statement
The mission of POPS the Club is to support youth impacted by incarceration and confront the challenges they experience. Through arts-based programs, POPS creates a safe, empowering space for these youth, transforming stigma into hope and dignity so they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, now and as adults.
Description
POPS the Club started in 2013 at Venice High School as a method of supporting youth who have loved ones in prison to hope and healing. POPS was established as a 501(c)3 in early 2014, and as of June 2019, clubs have been established in eight high schools in Los Angeles, as well as in Georgia, New York, and Pennsylvania. POPS publishes an annual anthology of POPS students' and graduates' writings and artwork. Our goal is to bring the POPS program to high schools across the country. The impact of the support of peers, a curriculum focused on self-expression, mindfulness, and community engagement has been profoundly healing.
