Mission Statement
Centro Tyrone Guzman’s mission is: to contribute to the well-being and full participation of Latines through education and family engagement. Our vision is: a vibrant, diverse and inclusive Latine community that belongs and contributes to the social and economic vitality of Minnesota.
Description
Centro Tyrone Guzman is the oldest and largest Minneapolis-based multi-service Latine organization. The organization was founded in 1974 when Marcela Lucero Trujillo-writer, poet, linguist, activist, and professor of Chicane Studies at UMN-joined with a group of young volunteers to respond to the needs of the growing Mexican-American population in Minneapolis.
Following the model of an Intergenerational Learning Community, we use a Montessori-influenced approach across the lifespan to provide information, connect, and engage Latines of all ages. Our continuum of programs serves around 4,000 individuals annually.
We use Family Engagement and Community Engagement strategies to support our participants in sharing their skills; standing up against injustices; creating innovative responses to community needs; and preserving and celebrating the traditions that have shaped their lives.
