The Foundation for Letters promotes improved college access through engagement with writing by providing urban schools with a range of literary-focused academic and enrichment programs. We also provide schools with assistance in the development of their own external support organizations, which build networks of donors, volunteers and partners that support literacy-focused education at their schools.
FFL is just coming into our own as a small organization, and are looking to increase our brand awareness and footprint among nyc public schools and their teachers/students/staff, as well as potential donors and volunteers. We recently held a fundraising gala in October, where we honored Vivica A. Fox. We received a good amount of press, but the cost of the PR firm makes repeating such an engagement prohibitive.
As a result, we are looking for volunteers with public relations and marketing experience who are fans of elevating urban education, increasing writing engagement, and volunteering for causes dedicated to social justice. We'd love for you to help us market specific programs and/or fundraising events, or consider joining our volunteer team at the Board of Directors or Advisory Council level, and help us build an identity on an ongoing basis.
In the near term, the Foundation has been named the official charity for the Brooklyn 5K/10k/15k in Prospect Park on April 16th, and we need advice and support to help us perform outreach to runners, volunteers and donors. We will be helping to administer the race, as well as raising funds to support our writing programs and partner schools. We are also getting kids into the action! Not only will students be running the race, but as a new journalism program at FFL, we will have students covering the action as journalists, photographers, bloggers, interviewers, and live social media correspondents. We are in need of press coverage to help attract sponsors as well as journalism and media professionals to volunteer with the students.
If you're interested in helping us with this event or volunteering with us in general, please reply to this opportunity!

Description
OUR FOCUS
Promoting Writing Engagement
Environments that emphasize the value of the written word help provide students with a path to improved literacy. FFL fosters these environments by supporting a variety of writing programs, ranging from poetry to fiction, essays, journalism as well as spoken word and other genres.
Increasing College Readiness
Increased fluency with the word bears a close connection to success in high school, college, and beyond. FFL supports programs that introduce students at an early age to the critical importance of a college education. These programs help provide a path to attending and succeeding in college, and help better position urban students for educational and professional success.
Improving Global Citizenship
Students in underserved urban neighborhoods who are consistently exposed to the world beyond their present circumstances develop a thirst for further education and intellectual engagement that makes pursuing a college education attractive. FFL supports programs that use engagement with writing as a tool for improved global understanding. These programs are also designed to give the students a sense of belonging in today’s global community.
