Mission Statement
The mission of the Shalom Center is to respectfully provide food, shelter, housing and guidance to those in need. The Shalom Center is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) social service organization incorporated in the state of Wisconsin in 1984. We fill a unique and vital role in the community as we respond to the food, shelter and support service needs of the homeless and low-income population of Kenosha. We accomplish this by partnering with the numerous faith communities, community at large, businesses, schools, non-profit and civic organizations, governmental agencies and others that share our mission. A Board of Directors governs the Shalom Center and is responsible for establishing the agency mission, setting policies and providing general governance under which all programs and services are provided. The board establishes and enforces operational policies and employs an executive director to carry out these policies and oversee the finances of the organization.
Description
The Interfaith Network began in 1982 as an outgrowth of discussions of human concerns issues by persons involved in the annual CROP Walk for Hunger. The Soup Kitchen was the first project of the Interfaith Network. A daily meal program, the soup kitchen has been in existence since 1983 serving out of the CYC and Grace Lutheran Church. In 1985 the former Deming School was purchased from the Kenosha Unified School District and renamed the Shalom Center. The Soup Kitchen opened at this site in 1986. In 1990 the second floor of the Shalom Center was renovated and turned into an Emergency Family Shelter. That same year also saw the inclusion of the Children’s Classroom and the Nursing Center. In 1991 services expanded and the Interfaith Network Nightly Shelter program (INNS) began. Since that time we have added the Shalom Center Food Pantry located at 8043 Sheridan Road.
