Use your audio skills to amplify the voices of public school students in San Francisco!

826 Valencia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping under-resourced students with their writing skills, seeks volunteers to help edit podcasts created during our one-day field trips. At these trips, students come to 826 Valencia to learn about podcasts, write an episode, record, and complete online publishing and audio editing activities. We then edit and produce the podcasts, selecting some pieces to give additional sound treatment to. You can check out our featured podcasts here.

Audio-Recording Support:

Our production team seeks volunteers to record students in approximately ten minute intervals during the afternoon session of our field trips (usually from 12:45 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.) During the recording session, you would record students as they read from their written piece at least twice.

Audio-Editing Support:

Our production team also seeks volunteers to do basic edits to the students' short pieces so that we can publish our students' work in a timely manner. While we do our simple editing with Reaper's audio software, any digital audio workstation will work for our purposes.

Mission Statement

826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

Description

826 Valencia comprises three writing centers-our flagship location in the Mission District, a center in the Tenderloin neighborhood, and a new center on the ground floor of an affordable housing building in Mission Bay -and three satellite classrooms at nearby public schools. All of our programs are offered free of charge to make them accessible to the students who would not otherwise be able to access our support.

Our goals are:

1) Transform students’ relationships to writing, building their confidence and pride.

2) Provide individualized attention and support, so students can make great leaps in learning.
3) Partner with under-resourced schools and communities, providing our free services to those who would not otherwise have access.

4) Cultivate wonder, inspiring imagination and creativity in all of our spaces and programs.
