Description: Most VOC projects serve meals as a thank you to hardworking volunteers. Crew chefs have a fun, yet vital role on the project team - keeping volunteers happy and fed! As crew chef, you may be in charge of single-day projects which require the setup of breakfast and lunch and pickup of donated food, or longer projects which require planning meals and menus, budgeting, preparing food, and managing outdoor cooking areas. Assistant crew chefs help with these tasks. Project settings vary from metro areas with access to electricity, plumbing, and a variety of supplies, to remote areas where cooking is more rustic requiring portable grills and transported water.
Benefits:
Build your skills and experience in planning and preparing food for large groups of volunteers
Gain new recipes and backcountry cooking techniques
Contribute to outdoor stewardship in a fun and meaningful way
Enjoy the happy faces and appreciation of volunteers
Help mentor others looking to become crew chefs
Requirements:
VOC crew chef training
Serve as assistant crew chef on at least 2 overnight VOC projects, one of which must be a project with 50 or more participants, under the mentorship of an experienced VOC crew chef
Commitment:
Be punctual and communicate with VOC staff member(s) and project team about responsibilities and expectations
Commit to spending time preparing and organizing food and supplies for the project in the days preceding and following completion of the project
Attend project team meetings; depending on the size and scope of the project, this can be anywhere between 1-3 meetings
You may choose to serve as an assistant on any project
Length of Term: You may remain a crew chef as long as you, VOC staff, and the project team feel comfortable and you remain committed to a high standard of quality.
You are not required to serve as a crew chef every time you volunteer
