Rescue Alliance, a network of NYC nonprofit organizations involved in homeless services, has an urgent need for volunteers to assist with their annual Don't Walk By homeless outreach event Saturday, February 25 th.
The ultimate goal of these events held every Saturday this month is to refer chronically homeless individuals to privately operated shelters within the Rescue Alliance network (e.g. Bowery Mission, NYC Rescue Mission) from an anchor church based in a different section of Manhattan each week.
According to Rescue Alliance staff, over the last three weeks, 435 individuals agreed to return to the anchor church for services, 192 individuals spoke with NYC Relief case workers, and 57 were referred for a bed at the NYC Rescue Mission shelter.
For the remaining Saturday this month, we are in great need of volunteers after an unexpected change in the location of the anchor church.
Volunteer Needs:
Van help - Bethel Gospel Assembly: 2 East 120th St. from 2pm - 7:30pm
- offering navigation/communication support for drivers
- assisting homeless guests with any bags/carts
- help with cleanup would be appreciated
Hospitality - The Salvation Army - 540 Lenox Ave. from 1pm - 7pm
- greeting spontaneous guests
- offering brief info on services
- passing out water, etc.
Cleanup - Bethel Gospel Assembly - 2 East 120th St. from 7:30pm - 8:30pm
- assisting DWB staff with cleaning program areas and packing up equipment at the end of the event
