Mission Statement

Lummis Day celebrates the arts, history and ethnic diversity of Northeast Los Angeles through educational and cultural events and an annual festival that draws the community together for a shared experience while providing a platform for cooperation among people of all ages and backgrounds.

Description

The program’s mission-to celebrate the arts, history and ethnic diversity of Northeast Los Angeles through educational and cultural events-has brought together of thousands of neighbors of all ages and backgrounds.Since staging the first Lummis Festival in 2006, the organizers have sought to present the best community-based music, dance, poetry and art in outdoor venues free of charge in an effort to help foster a greater sense of place and unity within the Northeast L.A. neighborhoods.

The Lummis Festival helps unite the neighborhoods of Boyle Heights, Cypress Park, Eagle Rock, El Sereno, Garvanza, Glassell Park, Hermon, Highland Park, Lincoln Heights, Montecito Heights, Monterey Hills, Mount Washington and Sycamore Grove.

The Lummis Festival takes its name from Charles Fletcher Lummis, who joined the L.A. Times as the publication’s first editor in 1876. A prolific writer and photographer, Lummis founded the Southwest Museum-the first museum in the city of Los Angeles. He was among the city’s first librarians, helped preserve the California missions and helped introduced the concept of a multi-cultural society to Southern California.

Lummis Days are presented by the Lummis Day Community Foundation a non-profit California 501c3 corporation. Sponsors include neighborhood councils, elected officials, companies and community-based organizations.
