ORGANIZATION: SHINE FOR GIRLS INC

SHINE mentors are local high school or college women who have qualified based on their math background, tutoring experience, dance experience, attitude and enthusiasm, and the results of a background check. The mentor training involves a half-day mentor training session.

Mentors receive:

  • Training in working with young girls and teaching math and dance
  • The opportunity to give back to their local communities and advocate for women in STEM
  • Hands-on experience in the service sector
  • Leadership opportunities at a young age
  • A space to enhance their own skills through teaching and channel their own creativity
  • Access to a national network of women in STEM
  • The possibility of pursuing multi-faceted SHINE for Girls work through our quickly growing national nonprofit during the summers
  • Recommendations and referrals for internships, colleges, and graduate schools

Our Mission is to improve math scores and spark girls interest in math by utilizing innovative method of formal dance training integrated with math instruction. SHINE for Girls turns the" I can't" around by creating an environment which girls not only realize they can but that they want to. Shine empowers middle school girls with the confidence and mathematical skill to understand and embrace math while creating a pipe line of next-generaion women leaders in STEM( Science, Technology, Engineering Math)Fields.

Description

Shine for Girls provides after school and summer intensive throughout Northern Va, DC and MD. We believe every girl is good at math and SHINE reaches the girls who do not even know that yet!. Shine for Girls combines kinesthetic learning ( dance performance) with a 3 tier curriculum to mentor and support middle school age girls find their confidence in math. Mentors for the DC based program are high school and college age girls who stand as mentors supporting one another and the middle school age girls from Title 1 schools throughout Northern Virginia.
