ORGANIZATION: Little Tokyo Service Center

Background

Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC) provides a range of resources to Angeleno communities, an important one being affordable child care, or early childhood education.

According to the National Research Council and Institute of Medicine, participation in high-quality early childhood education can have positive effects on children’s cognitive, language, and social development---especially among at-risk children. Despite this, in 2012, only 46 percent of three- to six-year-olds in poor families, and 52 percent in low-income families were in such programs.

Angelina Preschool, operated by LTSC, is a licensed, high-quality, early childhood education program looking to meet the need for quality early childhood education in Los Angeles’s poor and low-income communities. Angelina Preschool’s services are subsidized by the state of California. Thus, LTSC is able to provide free or low-cost, full-day (7am-5pm), early care and education to 3-5 year olds---an invalauble resource for busy, low-income families.
