Volunteers tutor students in grades K to 8 during the school day in one of Bridgeport's elementary or middle schools. Tutors work with students on a one-to-one or small group basis. They generally meet in the classrooms and work under the guidance of the teachers who provide direction and materials to reinforce reading or math skills. The School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport provides a book a month for tutors to give to their students to help them build their home libraries. Volunteers are asked to commit at least one hour per week and must complete an application and background screening.
