Youth in Service collaborates with motivated 18-25 year olds to develop their community leadership skills and to positively contribute to the lives of youth and families in the Olympia area.
Members serve in full-time positions as tutors, mentors, program assistants and volunteer coordinator at local schools and youth-serving non-profit agencies. See the available position descriptions and learn more about us here: http://www.communityyouthservices.org/p_americorps_YIS.shtml
Member responsibilities may include:
* Tutoring and mentoring -- during school hours and in after school and community-based programs
* Social skill building activities, including alternative recess and conflict resolution
* Facilitating homework clubs, violence prevention activities, recreational activities, and more
* Finding housing and other basic needs for families who are homeless
* Hosting family engagement activities
* Recruiting, training and managing community volunteers
* Building partnerships with local businesses and community groups
* Donation gathering and community referrals
BENEFITS:
* $1,205/month living stipend (before taxes)
* $5,815 AmeriCorps Education Award (upon successful completion of service term commitment and 1700 hours of service)
* Invaluable experience in schools or non-profits serving youth and families
* Student loan forbearance (on qualifying loans)
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Commit to serve 10 ½ months from August 16th through June 29th.
* Be 18 to 25 years old
* Have at least a high school diploma or GED
* Have previous volunteer experience
* Be passionate about helping youth and families

Description
The mission of the Community Youth Services (CYS) Youth in Service Program is to develop service leaders who address critical needs in the areas of education and human needs in the Olympia area located in western Washington State. Our team of AmeriCorps members perform meaningful service with youth and families in need, such as creating increased opportunities for high needs students to improve their academic and social skills and providing direct service to children and families that promote safe, healthy and sustainable living. Members serve in full-time positions as tutors, mentors, program assistants and volunteer coordinator at local schools and youth-serving social service agencies. While members serve at different placement sites, teamwork is highly valued and members meet often for training, planning service projects and support. The Youth in Service program only accepts professional references; defined as teachers, coaches, clergy, and job or volunteer supervisors.
