A "Book Buddy" listens to a child (in the primary grades) read for 10 to 15 minutes, giving help as needed. The teacher will provide a book, usually on the child's independent reading level, a level at which the child should know 95% of the words. This opportunity usually takes place within the classroom. The volunteer is encouraged to take time to speak with each student about the book, special interests, etc. Book Buddies help students boost their self-esteem and hone reading skills. A weekly, semi-monthly or monthly commitment of 1/2 to 1 hour is asked. This opportunity may also be added to reading aloud to a class.
