ORGANIZATION: ARIZONA TRAIL ASSOCIATION

Superstitions Volunteer Vacation

The Superstition Mountains are one of the most legendary wilderness areas in Arizona, rugged, remote and hauntingly beautiful. Humans have been trying to scratch out a place in these mountains since as early as 800 a.d., constantly battling the harsh landscape and arid climate. The dramatic Arizona Trail alignment in the Superstitions provides challenge to both hikers and maintenance. Difficult access points, steep and rocky terrain and scarce water all make this place a real test of fortitude. The reward, however, is a wild beauty found nowhere else.

Project

Volunteers will help with trail recovery, including trimming and grubbing out vegetation, removing downed trees and tread work such as re-benching or erosion control. Some areas may require short re-routes. The difficulty of this event is rated as "moderate": working from base camp, we will hike between 2-4 miles each day in addition to the trail work. Though base camp will be accessible by vehicle, the location is remote and does not have developed facilities. There will be ample time provided for exploring this beautiful and rugged area or simply relaxing at camp.
