ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - Tennessee Region

PLACEMENT PURPOSE
This is a national youth preparedness program offered in Red Cross regions across the country. The 40-60 minute presentation provides emergency preparedness education to youth in grades 3-5 (ages 8-11) in school classrooms and other settings. Numerous tools have been developed for this program including a standardized curriculum, workbook, quizzes and activities which have been carefully constructed with the help of curriculum and hazard experts. Many tools for presenters have been developed to foster consistency and fidelity to the program goals and objectives. The highly interactive presentation addresses home fire safety, a local natural hazard, psycho-social coping skills and household preparedness steps like making a plan and a kit.

OPEN TIME DAYS

Presenters should dedicate a minimum of 8-12 hours for the BIF and The Pillowcase Project training Parts 1 and 2.

Each presentation requires a 2 hour time commitment per presentation:⦆ (1 hour presentation plus time for set-up and clean up).⦆ This does not include travel time to presentation site.

Admin Support should be able to dedicate approximately 5 hours per week.

Presenters may be required to attend, either by phone or in person, regional sponsored meetings, check-ins, conference calls, to discuss program updates, changes, and issues.

REQUIRED TRAINING

Presenters:

  • Orientation to the American Red Cross
  • Basic Instructor Fundamentals (BIF), 6075 minutes online course
  • The Pillowcase Project Training Part 1 (webbased or instructor led)
  • The Pillowcase Project Training Part 2 (in person teachbacks)
  • Disaster Services: An Overview (Recommended)
Admin Support •⦆ Ability and interest in mentoring new team members and leaders
•⦆ Fluency in basic computer skills; adaptable to new systems
•⦆ Demonstrated respect and recognition of the role and the responsibilities of others; highly collaborative
•⦆ Communicates effectively both in writing and verbally
•⦆ Interests in expanding Red Cross capabilities through teaching and empowering others⦆
•⦆ Must be a Red Cross volunteer
  • Psychological First Aid (Recommended)
