PLACEMENT PURPOSE
American Red Cross Public Affairs is looking for a part-time volunteer to serve as a public affairs representative during times of disaster. The DAT-PA member will act as journalist, historian, and field specialist in collection of information and pictures during a disaster, capturing the response of the Red Cross volunteers at an event. They will issue press releases based on templates, post to social media based on templates, and upload pictures to social if available. DAT-PA volunteers will sign up for shifts to be on call.
OPEN TIME DAYS
On-call at least 4 times a month. While on-call, calls may be received anytime throughout the day, evening and midnight hours. The exact amount of hours of commitment varies as disaster events are unpredictable and often happen in waves.

While no formal minimum education level is established, you must be able to read and write in English, and do basic mathematics. If you have difficulty in any of these areas, please notify a paid staff member. We may be able to assist you in building your skills or find skill appropriate tasks.
Completion of volunteer application,⦆New Employee and Volunteer Orientation (2 hrs), Introduction to Disaster Service (2 hrs)⦆on-line self study course, DAT Public Affairs Orientation, Fundamentals of Disaster Public Affairs: The Local Response.(6 hrs) Working with Total Diversity (8 hrs), Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance (8 hrs), Shelter Operation (4 hrs), and Shelter Simulation (4 hrs) classroom courses.
Familiarity with Red Cross policies, regulations, and procedures especially ARC 3028⦆Disaster Action Teams, ARC 3033⦆Single Family Disasters⦆and the chapter’s disaster plan.
