Founded in 1982,Daystar Life Center is a community-supported non-profit organization that assists our neighbors in need with basic necessities in times of hardship. We do this by providing services with compassion, dignity and respect and advocating for those who would otherwise go without. In july 2019 we moved into our new, larger facility offering a wider range of volunteer opportunities as well as more volunteers for our expanded programs

We currently have the following volunteer opportunities available:

CHOICE Food pantry volunteers needed to help with assisting clients with their food needs. We need people to sort, rotate and stock the food.

Organic garden and compost - Our new facility has 625 sq. ft of raised garden beds. Gardeners and those wanting to learn are needed for planting, maintaining, harvesting and prepping for distribution. Our lead volunteer will guide the process.

Accounting/Bookkeeping - Volunteers assisting with accounting/bookkeeping are responsible for verifying, allocating, and posting financial transactions as they come in. Our accounting system is QuickBooks.

CHOICE Clothes Closet - The Clothes Closet volunteer is responsible for sorting, sizing, and folding donated clothing items, household items, bedding and bath items and assisting clients with finding what they need.

Data Entry - The Data Entry volunteer enters the demographic information recorded by the Interviewer on each client into Daystar’s client database system. Data Entry volunteers work closely with interviewers to make certain that documentation is complete and accurate on every person seen.

Interviewers - The Interviewer meets with the client to assess their situation and determine how the agency can meet their needs. This individual provides direct assistance to the client with food, clothing, transportation, personal hygiene items, identification, and utility and rental payments and documents services given. If Daystar is unable to assist the client, the Interviewer will work to provide referrals to community providers that may be able to help. Training will be provided.

Mail Clerk - The Mail Clerk receives and processes client mail. This individual is responsible for sorting and placing mail in client folders and distributing mail to clients who come to pick it up daily.

Maintenance/Clean-Up - Volunteers needed for indoor and outdoor maintenance. Help is needed for general cleaning and up-keep in and around the building. This may include vacuuming, mopping, dusting, and picking up trash outside.

Office Assistant - The Office Assistant assists in the overall operations and management of the Daystar office. This individual performs routine clerical tasks such as filing, letter writing, responding the telephone inquiries, proofreading documents, and various other tasks as they arise.

Receptionist - The Receptionist greets clients, helps them to register for services, produces paperwork for the client’s interview, and helps answer any questions clients may have while they wait to be seen by an Interviewer.

Group opportunities avaible!

Special Events - The Special Events volunteer assists in the preparation, set-up, breakdown and clean-up of special events that Daystar hosts throughout the year. These events include distribution of holiday meals, Daystar’s annual Drive Away Hunger Golf Tournament, and Daystar’s annual With These Hands Breakfast.

Website Designer/Assistant- Daystar Life Center needs a volunteer with experience in WordPress and SEO to regularly update the content, photos, calendar, and payment processing plug-in on www.daystarlife.com. The ability to add new features would be welcome. Work on your own schedule from home most of the time a few hours per week. Join out dedicated family of 200 volunteers to help our neighbors in need.

Information sessions are held the first and third Tuesday of every month at 1:30 p.m. at 1055 28th Street South St. Petersburg. This session reviews the history of the organization, the clientele we serve, and the job opportunities available.

Daystar Life Center, Inc. provides the necessities of life to our neighbors in need in order to alleviate hunger, homelessness, and hopelessness.

Description

Neighbors in need avoided homelessness, enjoyed hot water, ate a few meals, rode the bus to a doctor’s appointment, used an I.D. card to apply for Social Security, interviewed for a job with a free haircut or wore clothes from our Thrift Shoppe as result of assistance from Daystar Life Center, Inc. since 1982. Started at St. Mary Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church inSt. Petersburg,Florida, to meet the emergency needs of individuals and families with nowhere else to turn, the agency began as and continues to be a grassroots, community-supported organization that remains aware and flexible in meeting the changing needs of the community.

In 1992 Daystar received 501(c)3 status and applied for a grant from the local community. While the agency continues to be a ministry of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, it operates independently. The community at large began to see Daystar’s role and positive impact on the local community.

Daystar has added and enhanced services as needs have grown. Daystar is primarily a volunteer-driven organization. Daystar’s clients, volunteers and supporters are diverse and come from all religions, races and ages. Clients include the working poor, disabled, homeless-at-risk, elderly and homeless residents ofPinellas County.
