ORGANIZATION: SEED Madagascar

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Our Short-Term Community Construction Programme offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in a short-space of time (2-3 weeks) by assisting our construction team in all aspects of a locally-requested SEED Madagascar community construction project.
As a volunteer on this programme you may work on community projects such as building schools as seen in Project Sekoly or building wells and latrines in rural villages. In a group of like-minded international volunteers, with a team of Malagasy guides and an international group coordinator, you may get involved in digging a schools foundations and the construction of the walls, all the way through to painting the classrooms and building the classroom furniture. Or you may work on health and sanitation projects building wells and latrines in areas with poor sanitation, increasing access to safe drinking water and educating about the importance of hygiene.

All skills necessary to participate on the programme are taught during the placement so no pre-existing experience is required.

The work and lifestyle is challenging but incomparably rewarding and should be within the capabilities of any reasonably fit person. Although being in good physical shape is important, the ability to exhibit tolerance, patience and a good sense of humour when things get tough is just as essential. You will be asked various questions relating to these factors on the programme application form.

To have the opportunity to participate on the Short-Term Community Construction programme, we ask volunteers to raise a minimum donation of £795 for 2 weeks or £995 for 3 weeks.

Mission Statement

SEED Madagascar is an award-winning, holistic international development charity who envisages communities and ecosystems thriving across Madagascar. Our central mission is to enhance the capacity of individuals, communities, organisations and government in fulfilling sustainable environment, education and development goals in southeast Madagascar. The charity achieves this by working across four departments to respond to the most critical and express needs of the country: community health, education infrastructure, sustainable livelihoods, and environmental conservation. Our approach is based on partnership, co-management and skill-sharing with individuals, communities, local organisations, and governments. The programmes that result lead to lasting change, alleviating poverty and supporting environmental conservation for some of the world's most vulnerable people in threatened and irreplaceable environments, measurably contributing to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

Description

SEED Madagascar is a registered UK charity (No. 1079121) and Malagasy Non-Governmental Organisation, established in 1994, working in southeast Madagascar on humanitarian, environmental, and development projects. It is SEED Madagascar's belief and experience that nature conservation is impossible to impose; rather it must be proved to be of benefit to the local community to be sustainable. SEED Madagascar works with communities among the Antanosy peoples around the last remaining stands of littoral forest in southeast Madagascar. The Antanosy are among the poorest people in Madagascar and live within a beautiful and ecologically diverse yet endangered environment. SEED Madagascar's projects surround four different areas; Sustainable Livelihoods, Health and Sanitation, Conservation, and Awareness.
