The African People's Education and Defense Fund needs Black Student Unions, Black Fraternities and Sororities to help build for the upcoming and critically needed African community Health Fair.

The Health Fair will be on Saturday, April 29th at Akwaaba Hall, 7911 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland, CA.

Did you know that African people in Alameda County have the lowest life expectancy of any group at 74.7 years of age? We want to take this on! We need your help!

  • African people have the highest rates of death from all cancers of anyone in Alameda County.
  • African people have the second highest rates of death from heart diseases, stroke and chronic lower respiratory diseases than anyone in Alameda County second to Pacific Islanders.
  • African men as a group have an even lower life expectancy at 71.1 years. Versus life expectancy in Piedmont at 86.7 years.
  • African people experience the most premature death of any group in Alameda County, by far.
  • African Americans have low birth weight rates almost twice as high as the county average and much higher than any other racial/ethnic group.
Compared to a white child in the Oakland Hills, an African child in West Oakland is:
  • 2 times more likely to be a low birth weight
  • 13 times more likely to live in poverty
  • 4 times less likely to read at grade level
  • 5 times more likely to be unemployed as an adult
  • 3 times more likely to die of stroke as an adult

Your service organization can MAKE A DIFFERENCE by:

  • Organizing 5 - 50 volunteers to distribute leaflets on each door in the area around the Health Fair so that residents know that health services will be available! This is so important! The next opportunities are Sunday, April16th and 23rd from 10 - 12 noon. Can you participate?
  • Organizing 1 - 10 volunteers to help get our backyard community garden in shape for the Health Fair so that we can hold workshops and trainings on growing your own foods! Next opportunity Saturday, April 15th and 22nd 11 am.
  • Organizing 2 - 10 volunteers to get posters up in nieghborhood businesses and community centers, letting the community know the Health Fair is happening!
  • Distributing the information about the Health Fair to your contacts on social media and on campus!
  • Organizing 1 - 30 volunteers the day of the Health Fair to help greet participants, direct them to workshops and services, giving out balloons and popcorn, helping people cross the street safely, coordinating the kids activities, hold up signs to direct people to attend, provide security, film the event, take photos and more!

We will provide the training, the materials and the snacks! For leafletting, postering, and gardening, contact us to set up a date and time for your group to participate - we will work with your schedule!

Have fun, meet new people, make a difference! We need you, the community needs you, contact us today!
