Volunteers needed for youth literacy grades 4 - 8!
Background check required.
Mondays and Wednesdays, March 27 th - June 1 st, 3:00 P.M. - 4:30 P.M.
Pilsen Community Academy
This is an opportunity to provide constructive feedback and guidance to 4th - 8th grade students as they explore the power of writing! Pilsen Community Academy is seeking volunteers for the after-school program "ReadThenWrite" offered through our partnership organization Open Books.
ReadThenWrite is an immersive and enriching literacy experience for 4th - 8th grade students. Students read selected program literature and then create their own works, such as poems and stories, throughout the session. Their work is collectively published by Open Books, and is celebrated with an author launch gala at the end of the program.
Volunteers commit to serving Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 - 4:30 at the site location, Pilsen Community Academy. Experience with youth is a plus, but not required. Volunteers must do a background check. During session, volunteers report to Open Books and Pilsen Academy lead staff on site.
**The ReadThenWrite program is exclusively offered with a partnership through Open Books. Open Books is a "nonprofit social venture that provides literacy experiences for tens of thousands of readers each year through inspiring programs and the creative capitalization of books." They opened in 2006 and have served thousands of students. They help students harness and develop their literacy skills through their reading/writing programs while also donating high-quality books across the Chicagoland area. Visit them at their award-winning stores in West Loop (651 W. Lake St.) and Pilsen (905 W. 19 th St.), or at http://www.open-books.org/.
