ORGANIZATION: OLANCHO AID FOUNDATION INC

Santa Clara Social Studies Fair
Sixth grade students show off their traditional dress during the Annual Social Studies Fair, which celebrates Honduran culture.

Job Description:

The Olancho Aid Foundation operates a bilingual school system in central Honduras to provide quality, faith-based education in an area with limited opportunities. We seek foreign volunteers to serve as teachers within our schools to expose our students to native English and improve overall language proficiency. By educating our students in both Spanish and English, we provide them with greater opportunities after graduation.

Volunteer teachers in the elementary school may work with students from 3 rd to 6 th grade. Volunteers can expect to teach one class of students in several different subject areas, such as math, reading, and science. All classes taught by foreign volunteers are given in English, and volunteers are not expected to make accommodations within their lesson plans for the language barrier. Responsibilities of a volunteer teacher include preparing and giving lessons, evaluating student performance, and participating in school-wide activities.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates should have a college degree, experience working with children, English proficiency of a native speaker, and the ability to commit to a full year of service. We seek candidates with the ability to motivate and teach creatively, to adapt to differing cultural norms, and to work independently without close guidance. Ideal volunteers possess a solid work ethic, a genuine desire to serve, and strong Christian values. Teaching experience is not required, though it is highly preferred. Spanish proficiency is not required.

Though we accept volunteers from all backgrounds and beliefs, candidates should be willing to live in accordance with Christian values and serve as positive representatives of the Catholic Dioceses of Juticalpa. In addition, volunteers will be required to attend religious retreats and Catholic mass on occasion.

Compensation and Benefits:

Volunteer teachers will receive a monthly stipend of 7,500 Lempiras per month, which is roughly $325, depending on the exchange rate. Due to the low cost of living in our area, this is enough to cover food, utilities, personal care items, and modest travel expenses. It is possible to save with this amount and still live comfortably.

Other benefits include one round-trip flight to and from Honduras, international health insurance, and housing. Vacation time during Christmas holidays and Holy Week is paid.

How to Apply:

To apply, please fill out our online volunteer application at https://olanchoaid.org/forms/volunteer-application-form/ . Please specify that you would like to be considered as a volunteer teacher in the elementary school. Applicants will be contacted to submit a resume and college transcript once their application has been received. For questions, please email volunteers@olanchoaid.org .
